Atlantik-Brücke is hosting a joint workshop with the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) on “De-Risking and Recent U.S. Technology Controls – Exploring their Effects on the EU and Germany”. Economic and competition policy are important factors in the balance of power between states and are likely to become even more so in the coming years. In two consecutive workshops – one in Berlin and one in Brussels – we will be zooming in two rapidly developing areas up for transatlantic negotiation: technology controls and industrial policy. Together with experts in international finance and trade, we will take a close look at choices for governments and the private sector, explore options for broader plurilateral and multilateral coordination of economic policy instruments, and discuss how they fit into wider strategic foreign and security policy approaches, in particular Germany’s National Security Strategy (NSS) and the European Commission‘s Economic Security Strategy.
The speakers are:
During our first workshop in Berlin, we will focus on the changing nature of trade policy and broader economic policy, in which economic security has come to play a central role. Furthermore, we will take a deep dive into concepts like “partial economic decoupling or de-risking“ and their potential effects on the EU and German economies.
