German-American Friendship Concert

On the occasion of the UN General Assembly, the renowned Orchestra of St. Luke’s from New York City will give a concert in Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall on the initiative of the Siemens Arts Program in the spirit of German-American friendship. The soloists will be the award-winning clarinetist Anthony McGill, the internationally acclaimed cellist Daniel Müller-Schott and the exceptional talent and cellist Charlotte Melkonian. The concert will take place after the official end of the Transatlantic Forum on GeoEconomics. Conference guests will reach Carnegie Hall after a ten-minute walk, where doors will open at 6:00 p.m. After the concert, there will be a small reception on site in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Terrace Room.

The artists: 

Founded in 1974 by a group of virtuosi chamber musicians performing together at Greenwich Village’s Church of St. Luke in the Fields, Orchestra of St. Luke’s (OSL) is today “a mainstay of New York’s classical scene” making its primary artistic home at Carnegie Hall, where it performs more than any other orchestra. OSL has participated in 120 recordings, four of which have won Grammy Awards, has commissioned more than 70 new works, and has given more than 200 world, U.S., and New York City premieres.

Hailed for his “trademark brilliance, penetrating sound and rich character”, clarinetist Anthony McGill enjoys a dynamic international solo and chamber music career and is principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic — the first African-American principal player in the organization’s history.

Daniel Müller-Schott is one of the most sought-after cellists in the world and can be heard on all the great international concert stages. The New York Times refers to his “intensive expressiveness” and describes him as a “fearless player with technique to burn”.

Only ten years old, Charlotte Melkonian is an absolutely exceptional talent on the cello and is already in demand internationally. She received her first cello lessons at the age of 4 at the Cello Academy in Hamburg and in parallel at the Komitas Conservatory in Yerevan, Armenia.
