This workshop aims to contribute to a common understanding of what „economic statecraft“ entails. Participants will take a close look at crucial instruments and the policy goals they serve. Finally, participants will assess options for using such instruments in future American and European foreign policy making. In two sessions, participants will aim to reflect on the use of sanctions and export controls against Russia, particularly since the 24th of February 2022, and take a close look at new U.S. policy on export controls and sanctions and ways to cooperate with allies on such policies. The starting point for each session will be a presentation by an expert with deep knowledge on and experience in drafting and implementing foreign economic policy instruments.

We would like to thank SWP for their kind offer to co-host this event!
