The withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan has begun, and is currently set to be completed by the 4th of July. In the wake of the decision, the immediate impact of the withdrawal on the outlook of Afghanistan has received widespread attention. However, it also marks a milestone for the NATO alliance, ending its largest mission after almost 20 years. Therefore, it seems pertinent to consider what the withdrawal means for NATO, and the transatlantic alliance as a whole.
