In a moving speech at Atlantik-Brücke, Dr. Amy Gutmann, U.S. Ambassador to Germany, addressed the continuing importance of transatlantic relations and, against the backdrop of the Ukraine war, emphasized the need to work together to protect democracy against attacks by its enemies. The diplomat, whose father was forced to flee Nazi Germany because of his Jewish heritage, also spoke about the deep personal meaning her role in Germany has for her: “I know my father would be immensely proud that his daughter returned in his stead as the U.S. Ambassador.”
